The coaching philosophy behind Game Set Grow

I’ve spent the last 15 years on tennis courts coaching across the UK and now Australia. Coaching children taking their very first swing, adults rediscovering the game, and competitive juniors chasing tournament wins and national titles. In that time I’ve learned that the thing which most shapes a young player’s journey isn’t their forehand, their footwork, or even their natural talent.

It’s the environment around them.

The players who thrive are almost always the ones where the player, the parent and the coach are pulling in the same direction. Where the child plays because they love it. Where the parent knows how to support without adding pressure. And where the coach communicates openly so everyone understands the plan.

The players who struggle or quietly walk away from a sport they once loved are rarely short on ability. More often, something in that partnership has slipped out of balance.

Game Set Grow was built to fix that.

There’s a huge amount of help out there for players: drills, technique, tactics. But there’s very little honest guidance for the people standing on the other side of the fence, the parents trying to do the right thing with no manual to follow. That’s the gap I want to close.

My approach comes down to three things:

Game

Keep enjoyment at the centre. A player who loves the game will always go further than one who feels they have to perform.

Set

Build the right structure and partnership around the player, and let everyone’s role evolve as the child grows.

Grow

Develop at the right pace, for the long term, focusing on confident, independent players rather than short-term results.

Whether you’ve found me through the blog, the guides, or you’re a parent at the very start of this journey. Welcome. I hope what you find here makes the road ahead a little clearer and a lot more enjoyable.
